The UK Boutique Private Label Starter Playbook

A practical, no-fluff guide to launching your own jewellery label — materials, UK compliance, minimums, branding and pricing for a healthy margin.

Selling other people's brands is fine to start. But the retailers who build real, defensible margin are the ones who own a label. This playbook walks you through launching a private label jewellery line with a low-MOQ manufacturer — without betting the shop on a giant first order.

Who this is for: UK boutique owners, gift shops, buy-and-sell retailers and emerging jewellery brands who want to stock "their" products but need small, flexible minimums and clear UK compliance.

Why private label, why now

The UK jewellery market is crowded with the same imported lines. A private label lets you:

  • Own the margin — cut the middle-brand and keep a 3–4× markup instead of 2×.
  • Build loyalty — customers come back for your line, not a generic one.
  • Control the story — your packaging, your cards, your Instagram.
  • Differentiate locally — curate a range no competitor down the street carries.

1Choose your material niche

Don't try to be everything. Pick one or two materials that match your customer and price point:

MaterialBest forPrice point
Stainless steelEveryday, hypoallergenic, tarnish-resistant££ (entry)
925 silverClassic, giftable, "real" perception£££
Gold-plated (copper base)Affordable gold look, on-trend££
MoissaniteLab-diamond look, engagement / statement££££
Cubic zirconia (CZ)Trend pieces, fashion-forward££

Tip: stainless steel + CZ is the safest first combo for a UK boutique — low cost, high perceived value, easy compliance.

2Get UK compliance right (non-negotiable)

  • REACH: restricts hazardous substances. Your supplier must confirm compliant materials.
  • Nickel Directive: post-assembly nickel release limits apply to items that touch skin (earrings especially). Insist on nickel-free / tested components.
  • UKCA marking: post-Brexit UK conformity mark. Confirm your supplier can support documentation.
  • Documentation: keep SGS or equivalent test reports on file — some retailers and marketplaces will ask.

AGJewel note: all materials are nickel-free, lead-free and REACH-compliant, with SGS reports available on request.

3Minimums & mix-and-match strategy

Big MOQs are the #1 reason boutiques avoid private label. Work with a manufacturer that lets you:

  • Start branding from 50 pieces per design.
  • Mix & match across materials/ranges to reach a shipment minimum (e.g. 10 pcs/style × many styles).
  • Reorder small and often protect cash flow, test what sells.

Note: rings start from 30 pcs per design; some styles are supplied by the box — 100 pcs minimum.

4Branding & packaging

  • Logo engraving or laser etch on the product.
  • Custom cards pouches, boxes and thank-you slips.
  • Keep packaging recyclable UK shoppers notice.
  • Order packaging slightly ahead it's often the lead-time bottleneck.

5Sample-first, risk-free

Never order blind. A good supplier credits your sample fee to the first order:

  • Order a sample pack to feel quality and weight in hand.
  • Photograph it for your socials before committing.
  • The full sample fee is credited to your first wholesale order (first piece of each item qualifies).

6Price for a healthy margin

A simple UK boutique formula:

StageExample
Your landed cost (DDP)£6 / piece
Add packaging & overhead (≈15%)£7
Keystone (2×) wholesale-style£14
Retail price (typical 3–4× cost)£21–£28

Aim for at least a 3× multiple on landed cost. DDP pricing matters here — if customs surprises eat your margin, the maths breaks.

Your launch checklist

  • Pick 1–2 materials (start: stainless steel + CZ)
  • Shortlist 8–12 hero styles from the catalogue
  • Request compliance docs (REACH / nickel / SGS)
  • Order a sample pack (fee credited later)
  • Design logo + basic packaging
  • Confirm DDP quote to your UK postcode
  • Plan launch content (unboxing, "our new line")
  • Place first branded order (MOQ from 50/design)
